President Trump has threatened to move World Cup matches scheduled to be held in Foxborough, Massachusetts, next year, citing unrest in parts of Boston. The city, located about 48 kilometers from Boston, is slated to host games as part of the 2026 World Cup co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada. Trump criticized Boston’s mayor, Michelle Wu, referring to her as “intelligent” but “radical left.”
During a meeting with Argentina President Javier Milei, Trump raised concerns about certain areas of Boston being “taken over.” Although details were not specified, recent incidents, including arrests related to a violent protest, have been reported in the city. The President hinted at the possibility of relocating matches if he deemed cities unsafe for the tournament. However, any potential changes to the hosting plan would be at the discretion of FIFA, as confirmed by the organization’s vice-president, Victor Montagliani.
Despite Trump’s remarks, the ultimate authority over the World Cup host sites lies with FIFA, and altering the hosting arrangement would pose logistical and legal challenges. Trump mentioned his readiness to contact FIFA’s president, Gianni Infantino, to discuss moving matches to different locations if safety concerns arise. Infantino, described as a close ally of Trump, was implied to be capable of facilitating such a change if necessary.
