Thousands of students flocked to Broughdale Avenue and surrounding off-campus areas near Western University on Saturday for unofficial homecoming street celebrations. The vibrant scene, typical of past homecomings or HoCo events, featured a sea of students clad in purple, closely monitored by a heightened police presence, including officers from London, Hamilton, Windsor, and even a police drone.
Despite the lively atmosphere, law enforcement reported a peaceful day and evening with no significant incidents. Constable Matt Dawson noted the positive interactions between police and students, highlighting the lack of major disturbances during the festivities. While bylaw officers responded to noise complaints, large gatherings, and parking violations, issuing warnings and Administrative Monetary Penalties, the police refrained from giving an estimate of the crowd size.
Unofficial estimates suggested a crowd of roughly 15,000 to 18,000 people congregating on Broughdale at one point. In previous years, around 15,000 individuals attended similar gatherings during homecoming weekend, with paramedics transporting 39 individuals to the hospital last year, up from 31 the year before.
City and police officials are expected to release official figures later this week regarding the event. Despite establishing a fenced-off corridor for paramedic access, there were minimal incidents requiring medical attention. Concurrently, a separate crowd cheered on the Western Mustangs at Alumni Stadium as they triumphed over McMaster University. Ward 6 Councillor Sam Trosow, overseeing the area, noted fewer public complaints this year but emphasized the need for continued proactive enforcement of problematic properties in off-campus areas.
As the day transitioned into the evening, the Broughdale area cleared out by 9 p.m., with students migrating towards downtown bars and pubs. Authorities also responded to reports of disruptive crowds on John Street and Richmond Street, with fire crews and paramedics attending to unconscious individuals along Richmond Row. The overall tone of the event remained festive yet relatively peaceful, marking another successful homecoming celebration.
