A man from Winnipeg passed away after experiencing a medical crisis while participating in a boxing match at a charity event over the weekend, as confirmed by his boxing club. The United Boxing Club in Winnipeg announced the tragic incident involving Robert Boyko, 54, during the Corporate Challenge segment of the Melee Gala X charity fundraiser on Saturday evening, an event initiated by the club in 2013.
According to the United Boxing Club, Boyko began boxing in the winter of 2024 and quickly found it to have a positive impact on various aspects of his life. The club expressed deep sorrow over his loss, mentioning how Boyko had been a source of motivation and inspiration for its members.
In response to the situation, the club has extended support to Boyko’s family and is collaborating with Boxing Canada to offer counseling services. The statement from the United Boxing Club emphasized that all necessary safety measures, including medical assessments during registration and on the competition day, were diligently followed. Matches were organized considering factors such as age and weight, and medical assistance was promptly provided during the emergency.
Boyko’s sister, Karen Kyliuk, shared sentiments of devastation over his sudden passing but found solace in knowing that he spent his final moments engaged in an activity that brought him immense joy in recent times.
