Phil Collins, Iron Maiden, Billy Idol, Queen Latifah, Oasis, Sade, and Joy Division/New Order are set to join the prestigious ranks of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, alongside Wu-Tang Clan and the late Luther Vandross, as announced during the recent broadcast of American Idol. Eligibility for induction requires artists to have released their first commercial recording at least 25 years prior, with the final decision made by a panel of over 1,200 industry professionals, historians, and artists.
Renowned for his soft rock ballads like “In the Air Tonight” and “One More Night,” Phil Collins, already a Hall of Fame member with Genesis, secured a spot in his first year of nomination. Sade, known for hits such as “Smooth Operator” and “The Sweetest Taboo,” Wu-Tang Clan with their groundbreaking debut album “Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers),” and Iron Maiden, a driving force in the British heavy metal movement with iconic releases like “The Number of the Beast,” are among the illustrious inductees.
The event will also pay tribute to the Manchester music scene by honoring post-punk pioneers Joy Division and New Order, along with the Britpop sensation Oasis, fronted by Noel and Liam Gallagher. Billy Idol, known for his punk-infused pop anthems like “White Wedding” and “Rebel Yell,” will also be celebrated.
The induction ceremony is scheduled for November 14 at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, with a televised presentation on ABC and Disney+ in December. The following year, the ceremony will return to its traditional venue in Cleveland.
Additionally, special committee categories will recognize Queen Latifah, Celia Cruz, Fela Kuti, MC Lyte, Gram Parsons, Linda Creed, Arif Mardin, Jimmy Miller, Rick Rubin, and the late Ed Sullivan for their significant contributions to the music industry. The list of nominees who did not make it this year includes Mariah Carey, Lauryn Hill, INXS, Melissa Etheridge, Jeff Buckley, Pink, New Edition, and Shakira, while the previous year saw a diverse group of artists like Cyndi Lauper, Outkast, and Soundgarden being inducted into the Hall of Fame.
