“Former NFL Quarterback Mark Sanchez Facing Felony Charge”

Published:

Former NFL quarterback Mark Sanchez is now facing a felony battery charge stemming from a parking dispute altercation, on top of the misdemeanor charges already pending from the incident in Indianapolis over the weekend.

During a press conference, Marion County prosecutor Ryan Mears announced the new felony charge of battery causing serious bodily injury, indicating a potential prison sentence of one to six years. Mears mentioned that the investigation is ongoing, leaving room for additional charges to be brought forth.

The confrontation reportedly occurred when the 38-year-old Sanchez, allegedly under the influence of alcohol, confronted a 69-year-old truck driver who had backed into a hotel’s loading docks in downtown Indianapolis. This led to a physical altercation outside the vehicle, resulting in the driver using a knife in self-defense.

Following the incident, Sanchez was hospitalized with stab wounds to his upper right torso, while the truck driver, identified as P.T., sustained a cut to his left cheek. The severity of the injuries prompted the upgrade to a more serious felony charge, as per Mears.

The hearing originally set for Tuesday on the initial misdemeanor charges has been rescheduled to November 4, given Sanchez’s current hospitalization and stable condition. There was no comment from Sanchez’s attorney, James Voyles, on the case.

Sanchez’s brother, Nick, expressed gratitude for the support received during this challenging time, emphasizing Mark’s focus on recovery amid ongoing medical care. The situation remains under investigation with the prosecutor mentioning the availability of surveillance footage capturing the incident.

Sanchez, known for his NFL career before retiring in 2019, was in Indianapolis for coverage of the Colts versus Las Vegas Raiders game. The police chief emphasized accountability for violent acts in the city, regardless of the individual’s background or profession.
