“Alberta Next Panel Head Issues Apology for Offensive Remark”

Published:

The head of the Alberta Next panel in the province has issued a public apology for a statement that Premier Danielle Smith deemed offensive. Smith, who leads the panel, mentioned that maintaining respectful engagement is crucial and has urged improvement in interactions. The executive director of the premier’s office and panel moderator, Bruce McAllister, made the controversial comment during a town hall event in Calgary, sparking criticism on social media.

McAllister’s remark, directed at 17-year-old Evan Li, who persisted in questioning provincial spending on private schools, has caused uproar. Following the incident, McAllister issued an apology online, expressing regret for his inappropriate behavior and emphasizing the importance of maintaining respectful conversations.

In response, Li has demanded a direct, face-to-face apology from McAllister and called for his resignation. Li, a Grade 12 student, expressed disappointment in the lack of immediate action from others present at the event.

The town hall, part of a series organized by the Alberta Next panel, covers various topics, including equalization, an Alberta Pension Plan, and a provincial police force. Li’s inquiry, which focused on private school funding, was cut short along with other off-topic or lengthy questions.

The opposition NDP leader has called for McAllister’s dismissal, urging Smith to issue an apology to Li. The incident has sparked debate, with concerns raised about government standards and decorum.

The Alberta Next panel, which has been touring the province since July, is set to conclude its sessions with a final online town hall. The panel’s activities have drawn attention amid ongoing discussions about education funding and public policy.
