The Pentagon announced on Friday that the U.S. military is deploying an aircraft carrier to the waters off South America, marking an escalation of military presence in the region. Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth ordered the USS Gerald R. Ford and its accompanying strike group to the U.S. Southern Command region to enhance the capability to detect, monitor, and disrupt illicit activities that threaten the safety and prosperity of the United States.
Currently stationed in the Mediterranean Sea, the USS Ford, along with its five destroyers, is being redirected to the South American waters. The deployment comes amidst a significant U.S. military buildup in the Caribbean Sea and near Venezuela. The recent deployment and increased pace of U.S. strikes in the region have sparked speculation about potential further actions, including the possibility of targeting Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, who is facing charges of narcoterrorism in the U.S.
The region already hosts over 6,000 sailors and Marines across eight warships, with the potential addition of nearly 4,500 sailors and nine squadrons of aircraft if the entire USS Ford strike group arrives. Complicating the situation is Tropical Storm Melissa, which poses a threat as it hovers in the central Caribbean and could intensify into a hurricane.
Prior to the deployment announcement, the military conducted its tenth strike on a suspected drug-running vessel, resulting in six casualties and bringing the total death toll from the recent attacks to at least 43 individuals. The USS Ford strike group’s potential arrival in South America could further escalate tensions in the region, with the U.S. stressing its commitment to combating drug trafficking threats.
As the U.S. intensifies its operations against drug smuggling, concerns have been raised about potential implications on diplomatic relations and regional stability. The Trump administration’s strategy in the region appears to extend beyond anti-drug efforts, with experts suggesting a broader geopolitical agenda to assert U.S. influence and alignment with regional interests.
