Captain Christopher Culpepper of the U.S. Coast Guard described the conditions in Kipnuk and Kwigillingok as severely damaged. Alaska State Troopers reported the rescue of 51 people and two dogs in these villages, which faced significant storm surges according to the National Weather Service.
In Kwigillingok, one woman was found deceased, and two individuals were still unaccounted for. Meanwhile, in Kipnuk, earlier reports of missing persons were eventually dismissed by troopers. Residents sought refuge in local schools, including most of the population in both affected communities.
A 2022 report by the Alaska Institute for Justice highlighted the escalating flooding risks in low-lying regions like Kwigillingok, recommending urgent community relocation. Apart from housing issues, residents across the area encountered power outages, water shortages, spoiled food supplies, and damage to heating systems, complicating winter preparations crucial for sustenance.
Witnesses like Jamie Jenkins from Napakiak recounted the ferocity of the storm, with howling winds and rising waters prompting evacuations to safer locations. In Kotlik, Adaline Pete described unprecedented strong winds causing property damage but expressed feeling secure in her home.
State officials, including Senators Lisa Murkowski and Dan Sullivan, addressed the need for climate resilience and infrastructure funding in Alaska during a news briefing led by Governor Mike Dunleavy. The urgency to combat climate change impacts, like erosion and melting permafrost threatening communities, was underscored as essential projects faced delays amid increasing storm frequencies and intensities.
