“Small-Town Content Creators Navigate Fame and Privacy”

Published:

Dean MacArthur’s life took an unexpected turn when he started his Instagram account, @theparishproject, over two years ago. As a stonemason managing his own business, he initially created the page to document the renovation of an old parish house near a Catholic church in Mont-Carmel, Prince Edward Island.

In just three months, MacArthur’s follower count skyrocketed from zero to half a million. The overwhelming response from global audiences surprised him. Despite doubts about people showing interest in his endeavors in a remote location, the traction was undeniable.

However, MacArthur halted his posts in May of the previous year due to the immense pressure of consistent content production. He resumed sharing content in March, highlighting the challenges of maintaining high-quality output regularly.

Similar to MacArthur, other content creators on Prince Edward Island face the demanding nature of their craft. The Santiago family, based in Summerside, experienced the pressures of managing their YouTube channel, Diary of Four. Starting four years ago to document their family life on the island, they now boast over 20.3 million subscribers and a substantial following on various platforms.

The family’s success led them to support the Prince County Hospital Foundation. Francis Santiago, reflecting on their journey, emphasized the commitment required to sustain their online presence and the fluctuating nature of revenue from views.

Their dedication to producing engaging content is evident. However, they prioritize safeguarding their privacy by setting boundaries on the information shared online. The couple focuses on staged skits while keeping personal details, like their address and children’s school, confidential.

Lauren Holden, an Instagram influencer with nearly 200,000 followers, also navigates the challenges of maintaining an online presence. Balancing content creation with personal life, Holden has become more cautious about sharing details, especially concerning her children, to ensure their safety and privacy.

The digital landscape brings both opportunities and risks, as Holden discovered when someone stole her TikTok videos, creating a fake account that impersonated her. This incident reinforced the importance of setting boundaries and protecting personal information online, particularly for influencers with families.
