According to Ukrainian officials, two individuals lost their lives and 13 others sustained injuries in Kyiv due to Russian missiles and drones striking various locations in Ukraine overnight, including infrastructure and energy facilities.
The assault in Kyiv resulted in numerous fires and destruction of residential structures, such as a kindergarten, as reported by city authorities.
Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko remarked, “These attacks once again targeted our civilian and energy infrastructure.”
She added, “Russia’s current actions aim to trigger a humanitarian crisis in Ukraine in conjunction with the winter season.”
Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha mentioned that Russian missiles and drones also attacked the energy grid, railways, and residences in Dnipro, Kharkiv, and Sumy.
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with ‘coalition of the willing’ countries in the U.K. and Mark Rutte, secretary general of NATO, welcomed recent U.S. sanctions on Russia as a way to draw them to the negotiating table.
The Russian Defence Ministry stated on Telegram that the overnight strikes targeted Ukraine’s military-industrial complex enterprises and energy infrastructure facilities supporting its operations.
In a separate announcement, Russia’s Defence Ministry mentioned that its forces had intercepted 121 Ukrainian drones overnight, including seven heading towards Moscow.
Zelenskyy appeals for Western air defence systems
Large smoke clouds were visible over Kyiv on Saturday morning as firefighters raced to extinguish fires throughout the city.
By midday, they had contained one fire in a 140,000-square-foot warehouse with the assistance of two helicopters and extinguished another blaze in a separate building.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized the necessity of Patriot air defence systems in safeguarding Ukrainian cities from continuous Russian assaults.
Zelenskyy stated on Telegram, “Since the beginning of this year alone, Russia has launched about 770 ballistic missiles and over 50 ‘Kinzhal’ missiles at Ukraine.”
“Due to such attacks, we are prioritizing Patriot systems to shield our cities from this horror. It is crucial that our partners possessing the relevant capabilities implement our recent discussions,” he wrote in a separate English post on X.
