Three-time Olympic gold medalist Rebecca Johnston has officially retired from the Canadian women’s hockey team, as announced on Thursday. Hailing from Sudbury, Ontario, the 36-year-old first joined the national team at the age of 18 in 2007, subsequently participating in four Winter Games.
Throughout her illustrious career, Johnston secured Olympic gold medals in 2010, 2014, and 2022, in addition to a silver medal in 2018. She also showcased her talent in 12 women’s world championships, clinching three gold, eight silver, and one bronze medal.
With an impressive record, the forward stands among Canada’s top 10 in various categories, including games played (182), goals scored (63), assists (79), and total points (142). Gina Kingsbury, the general manager of Hockey Canada’s national women’s team and Johnston’s former teammate, praised her exceptional skills and contributions to the team.
Since her last appearance at the 2023 world championship in Brampton, Ontario, Johnston has been actively involved as a player development and grassroots hockey coordinator with the NHL’s Calgary Flames. Reflecting on her retirement, Johnston expressed deep gratitude for the opportunities and successes she experienced during her career, highlighting the immense pride and responsibility she felt representing her country.
