“Late Val Kilmer’s AI Avatar Stars in Film”

Published:

A year following the passing of the actor, a simulated AI version of Val Kilmer will star alongside other actors in an independent film, marking a bold venture into artificial intelligence technology in the realm of filmmaking.

First Line Films revealed the incorporation of Kilmer into the cast of a movie titled “As Deep as the Grave.” The production team disclosed that Kilmer had previously committed to the film before his demise, but health issues prevented his participation.

With approval from Kilmer’s estate, his digital representation will be utilized, and the estate will receive compensation. Mercedes Kilmer, the actor’s daughter, expressed that the role held significance for her father, emphasizing his optimistic view of new technologies for enhancing storytelling possibilities.

The esteemed actor passed away in April at the age of 65 due to pneumonia. In 2014, Kilmer was diagnosed with throat cancer, leading to two tracheotomies. Subsequently losing his natural speaking voice, Kilmer turned to an AI software company to recreate his voice digitally. His voice was altered digitally for his final screen appearance in the 2022 film “Top Gun: Maverick.”

The integration of artificial intelligence in the film industry has sparked debates in Hollywood lately, especially regarding AI-generated performances. Xicoia, a company, introduced the AI-generated persona “Tilly Norwood” last year, followed by a music video release this month, drawing criticism from SAG-AFTRA, the actors’ union, which has established regulations for the technology’s usage.

The movie “As Deep as the Grave,” previously known as “Canyon of the Dead,” has been in postproduction for several years. It is based on the true story of archaeologists Ann and Earl Morris, who uncovered Indigenous history in Arizona.

In the film, the AI version of Kilmer portrays Father Fintan, a Catholic priest and Indigenous spiritualist, alongside a talented cast including Abigail Lawrie, Tom Felton, Wes Studi, and Abigail Breslin. The project, which attracted Kilmer’s interest five years ago due to his claimed Cherokee heritage, aims for distribution and release in the current year.

Writer-director Coerte Voorhees and producer John Voorhees affirmed adherence to SAG guidelines, emphasizing ethical practices in collaborating with deceased actors’ estates and families. Mercedes Kilmer’s involvement in the project is seen as a significant contribution to realizing the envisioned character in the film.
