“Hate Crime Guilty Pleas in Asian Vandalism Case”

Published:

Two individuals have pleaded guilty in connection with a hate-motivated vandalism incident targeting an Asian family’s home in Barrhaven last year. Jaime Quigley admitted to one count of mischief to property under $5,000, while Mathew Galipeau pleaded guilty to one count of criminal harassment during a court session on Friday.

The charges stem from occurrences in June 2024 captured by a home security camera, depicting two individuals directing anti-Asian slurs and throwing eggs at the residence of a family of South Korean descent. Footage shown in court displayed the defendants ridiculing Asian languages and hurling derogatory remarks while standing near the victims’ house. Galipeau was heard expressing disdain for Asians and making derogatory comments about their appearance and language skills.

Moreover, security footage revealed the duo throwing eggs at the house, resulting in visible splatter on the roof. The family was abroad at the time of the incident. Subsequently, a neighbor noticed the damage and alerted the victims, causing them distress and feelings of unease.

During the court proceedings, Galipeau appeared remorseful as audio of his offensive remarks was played. The victims, who have chosen to remain anonymous for safety reasons, expressed enduring emotional pain and distress leading up to the incident due to ongoing harassment and disturbances.

Both defendants, Galipeau in his 30s and Quigley in her 40s, appeared in court separately and refrained from making any statements through their legal representatives. The case is set to return to court in early November for further proceedings.
