Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand has confirmed ongoing collaboration between Indian law enforcement officials and Canada, signaling a positive turn in the relationship between the two nations. This collaboration comes in the wake of previous tensions fueled by allegations linking Indian agents to an extrajudicial killing on Canadian soil.
In an interview on the show “Rosemary Barton Live,” Minister Anand disclosed that Canadian government representatives were engaged in discussions in India to facilitate law enforcement dialogue. When questioned about the active collaboration with Indian officials, Anand affirmed the cooperation.
Anand emphasized a step-by-step approach in discussions with host Rosemary Barton, highlighting the importance of diplomatic progress. National Security and Intelligence Adviser Nathalie Drouin, who was also present in India, echoed the sentiment by emphasizing India’s commitment to enhance cooperation with Canadian authorities in the investigation of the Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar’s killing.
Drouin stressed the significance of information sharing between the two countries, stating that it would contribute to ensuring safety on Canadian streets. The recent efforts to thaw the strained relations between Canada and India follow a period of turmoil triggered by accusations from former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau implicating the Indian government in Nijjar’s killing.
Both countries have taken steps towards restoring diplomatic ties, with India appointing a new High Commissioner to Canada and promising to reinstate visa services. Talks have also begun to revive trade discussions between the nations, focusing on various areas including trade, defense, energy, and law enforcement cooperation.
Anand reaffirmed Canada’s commitment to safeguarding its interests while acknowledging progress in understanding each other’s viewpoints. As the dialogue continues, the Canadian government remains cautious and methodical in its approach to furthering its relationship with India.
