“Gaza Crisis: Over 67,000 Palestinians Dead, 170,000 Injured”

Published:

Over recent years, Palestinians in the Gaza Strip have endured relentless airstrikes, widespread hunger, and repeated displacement due to ongoing Israeli military actions in the region. The conflict has resulted in the deaths of over 67,000 Palestinians and left nearly 170,000 individuals with severe injuries, as reported by the Gaza Health Ministry. The escalation in violence followed an attack by Hamas on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, which resulted in numerous casualties and hostages taken.

Despite recent efforts to initiate peace talks under the U.S. President Donald Trump’s peace plan, airstrikes continued in Gaza preceding the two-year anniversary of the October 7 attacks. Satellite imagery analysis conducted by researchers at Oregon State University revealed that approximately 60% of buildings in the Gaza Strip had been destroyed or damaged by October 2, a significant increase from previous estimates. Gaza City and its surrounding areas were the most heavily affected, with about 74% of structures damaged or destroyed during the conflict.

The displacement crisis in Gaza worsened as hundreds of thousands of Palestinians were forced to flee their homes due to the ongoing offensive. Reports indicated that only a fraction of the hospitals in Gaza were operational, severely impacting the healthcare system in the region. The situation was exacerbated by a significant shortage of food and humanitarian aid, leading to a spike in hunger-related deaths.

The Gaza Health Ministry reported that malnutrition and starvation had claimed the lives of 460 Palestinians, including 154 children, with an additional 181 deaths occurring after a famine report was published by the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC). The blockade on aid distribution further intensified the humanitarian crisis, resulting in a significant number of casualties among those attempting to access food and medical assistance.

The conflict in Gaza has also raised concerns about the high number of civilian casualties, with experts suggesting that the actual death toll may be significantly higher than reported. The United Nations and various human rights organizations have criticized Israel for its military actions in Gaza, accusing the country of targeting civilians and causing widespread destruction and suffering in the region.
