When it comes to brown bears, being exceptionally plump is a top-notch quality.
As a result, Alaska’s Katmai National Park and Preserve organizes its yearly Fat Bear Week competition during autumn, allowing nature enthusiasts to select their favorite chubby bear.
This event not only honors the park’s cherished and hefty brown bears but also celebrates the flourishing ecosystem that enables them to gain the necessary weight for surviving the extended winter and nurturing healthy offspring.
“Observing these bears getting fat is adorable and entertaining. However, it is crucial for their survival that they accumulate that weight,” stated Ashleigh Monaco, a ranger at Katmai National Park, in an interview with host Nil Kӧksal of As It Happens.
“A fat bear signifies a prosperous bear.”
Getting to Know the Competitors
Fat Bear Week originated in 2014 to highlight the resilience of brown bears, who pile on weight each autumn by feasting on salmon at the Brooks River.
Over time, the competition has gained widespread popularity, with over a million online votes cast last year.
“I understand that it brings happiness to people during challenging times in our world,” Monaco expressed.
This year, voters will select from 12 plump contenders unveiled on Monday, which include two-time defending champion Grazer, also known as Bear 128.
In a memorable turn of events last year, the formidable mother bear triumphed over Chunk, the massive male who had killed her cub earlier in the season.

Regarding the incidents of cub-killing, Monaco clarified that it is simply part of natural bear behavior.
“We are still in this wild and rugged landscape, and these bears are wild animals. They will fight and compete for river spots and food,” she explained.
This year, however, has been marked by a lack of violence, thanks to a bountiful salmon run and low water levels that allow the bears to fish freely along the river without the need for competition for prime spots.
“It’s like an unlimited buffet,” Monaco remarked.

Once again this year, Grazer is the bear to beat.
“She’s in fantastic shape,” Monaco remarked. “She’s extremely plump.”
