Evacuation orders issued near Kupiansk due to security concerns

Published:

Local authorities in Ukraine have issued evacuation orders for residents in numerous villages near the heavily damaged northeastern city of Kupiansk due to the deteriorating security situation amid ongoing Russian assaults. Oleh Syniehubov, the governor of the northeastern Kharkiv region, announced on Telegram that 409 families, totaling 601 children, have been instructed to vacate 27 localities. Subsequently, another official stated that the evacuation list has been expanded to encompass 40 localities.

The city of Kupiansk has been a focal point for Russian forces in their westward advancement through central and Eastern Ukraine during the prolonged conflict. Initially captured by Russian forces at the onset of the February 2022 invasion of Ukraine, Kupiansk was later reclaimed by Kyiv’s forces in the same year.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine has emphasized the defense of critical front-line areas, including Kupiansk, against Russian aggression. Additionally, Zelenskyy has mentioned a Ukrainian counter-offensive near the town of Dobropillia to the south. Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin asserted that Moscow’s forces maintain a strategic advantage along the front lines. Ukraine’s top military officer, Oleksandr Syrskyi, estimates the front line spans over 1,200 kilometers.
