“Elliot Page’s $25K donation for N.S. well project faces prolonged delays”

Elliot Page’s $25,000 donation to construct a community well in Shelburne, N.S., has turned into a prolonged ordeal with no water yet flowing. The project, entangled in disputes, has faced setbacks for seven years, involving multiple entities such as the province, municipal governments, a community college, and the South End Environmental Injustice Society (SEED).

Initially inspired by Page’s 2019 documentary, “There’s Something in the Water,” which highlighted environmental racism in Black and Indigenous communities, the donation was aimed at providing clean water to a community near Shelburne affected by pollution. However, disagreements over the well’s location and the utilization of funds have hindered progress.

Despite Page’s financial support, issues surrounding the well’s implementation persist. The project has now shifted focus from a proposed location at a recreation center to an existing well on the NSCC campus outside town limits. A significant portion of Page’s donation has been used for testing the well.

Efforts to resolve the project’s complexities have been ongoing, with the province committing funding under the condition that the project is completed by November 2027. The involvement of various stakeholders, including the municipality and SEED, has added layers of complexity to the situation.

While challenges persist, the need for the well is increasingly urgent due to climate change exacerbating drought conditions in the region. The evolving narrative around environmental racism and water access remains pivotal, underscoring the significance of addressing these issues promptly.

Despite the project delays, Page remains committed to the cause and is considering the possibility of a second documentary to shed further light on the ongoing challenges faced by the community. The journey towards resolving the water crisis in Shelburne continues, with stakeholders striving to navigate the complexities and find a sustainable solution.
