YouTube TV subscribers are no longer able to access Disney-owned channels, including ABC and ESPN, as the two entities could not reach an agreement on a new content distribution deal. Other channels that have disappeared from Google’s pay TV platform consist of the Disney Channel, FX, and Nat Geo.
In a blog post released late Thursday, Google’s pay TV platform mentioned that Disney carried out its threat to suspend content during the negotiation process. This situation could potentially impact the coverage of various sports events such as college football games on Saturdays, along with NBA, NFL, and NHL games.
YouTube, the leading internet TV provider in the U.S. with over nine million subscribers, faces this disruption. Hulu, which is owned by Disney, follows closely with approximately half as many subscribers. Viewers have been alerted to the dispute through scrolling warnings on their screens in recent weeks.
According to YouTube, Disney leveraged the threat of a blackout as a negotiating strategy to increase prices for subscribers. YouTube also pointed out that Disney’s decision to remove its content benefits its streaming services, Hulu + Live TV and Fubo. YouTube expressed disappointment for its subscribers and urged Disney to collaborate to restore their networks to YouTube TV.
As a gesture to affected subscribers, YouTube announced a $20 credit if Disney content remains unavailable for an extended period. The base subscription cost for YouTube TV is $82.99 per month.
Disney, on the other hand, accused YouTube TV of not agreeing to fair rates for its channels and opting to deprive subscribers of their favored content. Disney highlighted the importance of this weekend’s games, particularly involving Top 25 teams. Disney further criticized Google’s market dominance and alleged that it is attempting to eliminate competition and undermine previously negotiated industry-standard terms. Disney emphasized its commitment to resolving the situation promptly.
