Cristian Mungiu’s latest film, “Fjord,” set in Norway and exploring political divisions, has secured the prestigious Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. This marks Mungiu’s second Palme d’Or win after his acclaimed film “4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days.”
Amid a relatively subdued 79th Cannes Film Festival, “Fjord” stood out for its captivating narrative on what Mungiu described as “left-wing fundamentalism.” The movie features Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve portraying Romanian evangelicals who face a custody battle with Norwegian child services due to disciplinary actions.
Addressing the contemporary societal rift, Mungiu emphasized the film’s stance against fundamentalism and advocated for concepts like trauma, inclusion, and empathy to be more actively embraced.
Mungiu joins the exclusive ranks of filmmakers who have clinched the Palme d’Or twice. His previous award-winning film, “4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days,” garnered the prestigious prize in 2007.
The victory for “Fjord” continues the remarkable success of Neon, the distribution company, which has now secured seven consecutive Palme d’Or winners. “Fjord” follows in the footsteps of past winners such as Jafar Panahi’s “It Was Just an Accident” and the 2024 champion “Anora,” which later triumphed as the best picture at the Oscars.
