The ceremony, part of the Supreme Court’s 150th anniversary celebrations, gathered Justice Minister Sean Fraser, legal professionals, academics, and former court members. Wagner urged participants to reaffirm the principles of the rule of law, an independent judiciary, and equal justice access, which have shaped Canada’s jurisprudence for 150 years.
In a symbolic move, Supreme Court justices introduced new black ceremonial robes, replacing the traditional red and white attire. Wagner described the modern design as a reflection of Canada’s commitment to openness and accessibility. Additionally, he announced the establishment of a Supreme Court historical society to preserve the court’s legacy through research, education, and public engagement.
Minister Fraser highlighted the challenges to democracy’s survival and emphasized the importance of defending Canada, its institutions, and the law. He called on elected officials, judges, and all Canadians to take ownership of democracy to prevent the erosion of rights. Fraser underscored the significance of preserving the Supreme Court’s legacy to ensure Canada’s freedom and strength in the years to come.
