Prime Minister Mark Carney is urging a prompt execution of the initial stage of the peace agreement proposed by the United States between Israel and Hamas, following the recent announcement of a deal on Wednesday. U.S. President Donald Trump outlined the terms, indicating that Hamas will release all remaining Israeli hostages while Israel will withdraw its troops to a designated line. Carney commended Trump, along with representatives from Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey, for their contributions to reaching this significant milestone.
Expressing relief over the imminent reunion of hostages with their families, Carney emphasized the possibility of achieving peace after enduring prolonged suffering. Canada is calling on all involved parties to promptly adhere to the agreed-upon terms and collaborate towards establishing a fair and enduring peace. If implemented, this deal would mark the closest the two sides have come to halting a conflict that has escalated into a regional crisis.
Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre also lauded the U.S. president for his pivotal role in advancing peace efforts, describing it as a monumental step towards long-term reconciliation. Poilievre expressed optimism for the safe return of hostages and an end to the violence, fostering an environment conducive to sustainable peace.
Carney revealed that he had recently engaged with key figures in Trump’s peace initiative, including former British Prime Minister Tony Blair and Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law. He emphasized Canada’s collaboration with Gulf and Arab nations in alignment with the U.S. peace plan’s objectives. Trump’s comprehensive 20-point plan encompasses a ceasefire, a hostage exchange, Israeli withdrawal, Hamas disarmament, and the establishment of an international-led transitional government.
While progress has been made with the first phase of the agreement, uncertainties remain regarding the future governance of Gaza post-conflict resolution. Netanyahu, Trump, and various Western and Arab states have excluded Hamas from the peace process, advocating for Palestinian technocratic rule under the Palestinian Authority. Hamas, however, insists on local governance supervised by Arab and Muslim nations, rejecting external intervention.
Despite ongoing military operations by Israel in Gaza, efforts to de-escalate the conflict have been noticeable following Trump’s intervention. The situation in Gaza remains dire, with significant destruction caused by the prolonged conflict. Substantial casualties have been reported, emphasizing the urgency of a sustainable resolution to prevent further loss of life and infrastructure damage.
