“Canadian Wheelchair Athlete Dominates World Para Athletics Championships”

Published:

Wheelchair athlete Anthony Bouchard secured the top spot on the podium during the eighth day of the World Para Athletics Championships held in New Delhi, India. The 32-year-old Canadian displayed a commanding performance in the men’s 100-meter T52 final, clocking in at 16.95 seconds.

Reflecting on his victory, Bouchard shared, “I stuck to the strategy I had planned earlier in the day. I stayed focused and tuned out distractions to run my own race.” He acknowledged the increasing competition but remained confident in his performance.

Earlier in the day, Bouchard set a new season’s best, personal best, and World Para Athletics Championships record with a time of 16.78 seconds, propelling him into the final round. Despite facing challenges such as the heat and air pollution in India, Bouchard expressed satisfaction with his performance.

In another event, wheelchair racer Austin Smeenk advanced to the men’s 800-meter T34 final with a convincing victory in his heat, finishing in 1:41.45. Smeenk, the defending Paralympic champion and current world record holder in the event, aims to secure his second medal at the championships after winning bronze in the men’s 400-meter T34 final earlier in the week.

As the competition progresses, Canada anticipates further success with seven athletes set to compete on the final day. Among them, Sheriauna Haase, Chloe Dunbar, and Renee Foessel are geared up to showcase their skills in various track and field events. Nate Tucker, Liam Stanley, and Marissa Papaconstantinou are also poised to deliver strong performances in their respective races.
