Bo Bichette will not be playing for the Toronto Blue Jays in the American League Division Series against the New York Yankees. The talented shortstop has been dealing with a knee sprain and remains day to day. Manager John Schneider mentioned that the decision regarding Bichette’s status was being finalized just before the series opener at home on Saturday.
Bichette sustained the knee injury on September 6 during a game against the Yankees at home plate. Despite missing the last three weeks of the season, the 27-year-old had an impressive performance, leading Major League Baseball with 181 hits in 139 games. He finished tied for second in hits and had a batting average of .311, along with hitting 18 home runs and driving in 94 runs.
Additionally, three-time Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer and Chris Bassitt will also be absent from the Blue Jays’ roster for the AL Division Series. Scherzer, who struggled in his recent starts, didn’t make the cut for the series due to his performance, including a noticeable issue with tipping pitches in a September 7 game against the Yankees. Bassitt, the regular season wins leader for the Blue Jays, has been sidelined since September 18 due to lower back inflammation.
Kevin Gausman will be among the thirteen pitchers on Toronto’s roster for the series, with the responsibility of starting Game 1. The Blue Jays are aiming for their first post-season win since 2016 after facing three consecutive wild-card series sweeps in recent years.
