Two Canadian researchers have been recognized in a worldwide image competition that highlights ecological research. The 2026 joint BMC Ecology and Evolution and BMC Zoology image competition celebrated 11 photos from researchers across the globe at different career stages. These images showcase animals in their natural habitats, scientists and students engaged in ecological research, and various natural scenes.
Liam Brennan, a master’s student and photographer from the University of New Brunswick (UNB), won the competition’s research in action category with his photo titled “Intertidal education.” Meanwhile, Allen (Haolun) Tian, a post-doctoral researcher affiliated with Queen’s University, Hangzhou Normal University, and Zhejiang University in China, claimed the “protecting our planet” category with his image “A bridge between past and present.”
Photographs play a crucial role for researchers as they document their work and offer insights into the realm of science. Brennan emphasized the significance of such images in building public trust in environmental education and the pursuit of ecological research.
Brennan captured his winning image “Intertidal education” while overseeing undergraduate students monitoring coastal fish species in St. Andrews, N.B. The photo showcases a moment of curiosity on the students’ faces as they engaged in their research activities under the moonlit sky, highlighting the challenges of working in the Bay of Fundy with its extreme tides.
On the other hand, Tian’s winning image “A bridge between past and present” combines 33 drone photos of the Long Sault Parkway in the upper St. Lawrence River, illustrating the interconnectedness of ecosystems and the impact of human activities on natural environments.
Both photographers underscored the importance of using images to foster natural empathy and connect people to the environment, even showcasing ecosystems that have been impacted by human actions. Their work not only showcases the beauty of nature but also raises awareness about the importance of conservation efforts and ecological studies.
Other winners in the BMC Ecology and Zoology competition included images capturing diverse aspects of ecological research, wildlife interactions, and environmental conservation efforts, demonstrating the beauty and complexity of the natural world.
