“Canadian Coast Guard Crew Battles Perilous Mission”

Published:

Canadian Coast Guard Capt. Irving Barney, with almost 40 years of rescue experience, reflected on a recent mission near Port au Choix, N.L. where things took a dangerous turn. As the crew attempted to tow a distressed vessel, worsening weather conditions made the operation challenging.

Initially, all seemed routine as they responded to a distress call from the Linden’s Commander, a scallop dragger that had lost power in the Strait of Belle Isle. However, as they approached Ferolle Point, the weather deteriorated rapidly with strong winds and rough seas.

Captain Daniel Morgan of the Linden’s Commander described the boat listing dangerously, at risk of capsizing. Capt. Barney, acknowledging the perilous situation, acted swiftly. The crew donned survival suits in preparation for the worst, facing daunting waves and fuel concerns on the coast guard vessel.

With the situation escalating, Barney made a crucial decision to seek backup. Another fishing boat, the Strait’s Stream, responded promptly to assist with the tow, allowing Barney to refuel. Additionally, a Cormorant search and rescue helicopter was dispatched from Gander to provide further support.

Amidst the chaos, a skilled helicopter pilot managed to lower a pump to the distressed vessel, aiding the crew in stabilizing their boat. Eventually, the Linden’s Commander was safely towed to Port au Choix harbor, thanks to the collaborative efforts of all involved.

The crew, exhausted but grateful, found solace in a warm meal and a night’s rest at the Sea Echo Motel. Despite the risks inherent in their profession, they returned to the sea, acknowledging the unpredictable nature of their environment.

Reflecting on the successful rescue, the crew expressed gratitude for the timely assistance and highlighted the importance of search and rescue resources in maritime operations. The resilience of fishermen like Capt. Barney and Captain Dempster serves as a testament to their unwavering dedication to their craft in the face of adversity.
