The Canadian government has unveiled a $400 million financial package to support Algoma Steel under the large enterprise tariff relief program, as announced by Jobs Minister Patty Hajdu on Monday. This funding is aimed at assisting Algoma Steel Inc. in sustaining operations, shifting towards a more diversified business model, and minimizing disruptions to its workforce, according to an official statement.
Additionally, the Ontario government will contribute $100 million in support for the company. Minister Hajdu emphasized the importance of ensuring the prosperity of workers and businesses amid global trade challenges and emphasized the government’s commitment to fostering economic leadership.
Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne, responsible for disbursing the financial aid through federal agencies, highlighted that the assistance would enable Algoma to navigate the impact of U.S. tariffs effectively and enhance its competitiveness while safeguarding jobs.
The financial aid forms part of a $10 billion financing initiative introduced in March to assist large companies in mitigating the effects of tariffs and trade counter-measures. This initiative supplements a series of other measures implemented by the federal government to support the Canadian steel industry in managing tariff-related challenges.
