Gail Hoevenaars from London, Ontario, and her husband stopped to assist a driver seeking directions to Costco in what they believed was a Good Samaritan act. While providing directions, a woman in the vehicle distracted Hoevenaars by pretending to seek prayers for her mother undergoing heart surgery. In the process, the distraction led to the theft of two pieces of Hoevenaars’ jewelry.
Feeling violated and deceived, Hoevenaars reported the incident to the London police, who have issued warnings about similar distraction thefts in the city. This type of crime is on the rise across Canada, with Toronto experiencing a significant 1,235% increase in distraction thefts this year compared to the previous year.
Edmonton police have also received numerous reports of distraction thefts, highlighting the growing trend nationwide. Hamilton police released footage showing a suspect stealing a senior’s necklace using distraction tactics.
Constable Matthew Dawson of the London police emphasized the importance of staying cautious and vigilant. He advised the public to be wary of unfamiliar behavior, especially when strangers offer gifts or attempt to get close physically. Despite being able to provide directions, maintaining a safe distance from unfamiliar vehicles and individuals is recommended to prevent falling victim to distraction thefts.
