After a decade since their final performance, The Tragically Hip is giving Canadians the chance to relive the 2016 broadcast of their last Man Machine Poem concert through a special airing on CBC this summer. The event, titled The Tragically Hip: A National Celebration, will be broadcast on Aug. 22 at 7 p.m. local time (8 p.m. AT/ 8:30 NT) on CBC TV, CBC Gem, CBC Radio One, CBC Music, and CBC Music’s YouTube channel, along with SiriusXM’s CBC, The Tragically Hip, Iceberg, and Canada Talks channels.
To ensure all fans can partake in the experience, communities can register to host public screenings. The original concert occurred in the band’s hometown of Kingston, Ont., on Aug. 20, 2016, drawing in 11.7 million viewers on CBC. This concert marked The Tragically Hip’s final tour before the passing of lead singer Gord Downie on Oct. 17, 2017, due to brain cancer.
In conjunction with the broadcast, the band will release a new live album titled The Tragically Hip: Live July 22 – August 20, 2016 on Aug. 21. The album, mixed and mastered by the band’s longtime audio engineer Mark Vreeken, will include live renditions of popular tracks like Ahead By a Century and New Orleans is Sinking from their last nationwide tour. Live versions of Fifty-Mission Cap from Edmonton and Locked In The Trunk Of A Car from the final Kingston show are already available.
Furthermore, The Tragically Hip is set to be inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame at Toronto’s Massey Hall in September.
