A new and exciting track and field event is set to captivate audiences in Times Square, challenging the traditional Broadway scene. The spotlight will be on the women’s long jump for a special one-night competition as part of the Athlos series, dedicated to showcasing women’s athletics in a vibrant and dynamic way.
The event kicks off with reigning world and Olympic champion Tara Davis-Woodhall headlining the long-jump extravaganza in Times Square, a prime location for tourists and locals alike. The action continues the next day at Icahn Stadium on Randall’s Island, featuring a lineup of elite athletes, including Olympic champions Faith Kipyegon and Masai Russell, competing for a substantial prize purse of over $773,000 US. Each winner will also receive a prestigious silver crown from Tiffany & Co.
Looking ahead, Athlos plans to introduce a team-based format in the upcoming season, aiming to elevate the sport of track and field to new heights.
This marks the second edition of the Athlos NYC meet, with founder Alexis Ohanian, known for his role in Reddit, leading the charge in organizing a spectacular event for female athletes. Following the success of the previous year, Ohanian and his team sought to raise the bar even higher, brainstorming innovative ideas to blend professionalism with entertainment value.
The highlight of the event will be the Times Square long-jump competition, held in front of iconic stores like Sephora and Disney, symbolizing a full-circle moment for many athletes, including Davis-Woodhall. The event promises high-energy performances, live music, and a lineup of exciting races, featuring top athletes from the Paris Olympics.
Athletes will vie for substantial prize money, with additional bonuses for breaking world records, emphasizing Athlos’ commitment to rewarding excellence and supporting athletes’ financial well-being. The event will also pay tribute to track legends and feature a performance by singer Ciara, enhancing the overall entertainment experience.
Ohanian’s vision for Athlos extends beyond a single event, with plans to expand globally and create more opportunities for women in athletics. By fostering partnerships and innovation, Athlos aims to be a driving force in reshaping the track and field landscape and empowering athletes on a global scale.
