Olympic Gold Medalist Kelsey Mitchell Dives Into Bobsled

Published:

Kelsey Mitchell, the Olympic gold medalist in track cycling, is excited about the potential she sees in herself for new challenges. After being told she had great potential during a bobsled tryout camp, Mitchell eagerly embraced the opportunity. She is now gearing up to join the Canadian bobsled team at a training camp in Whistler, B.C., ahead of the upcoming World Cup season in Cortina, Italy.

Mitchell, who clinched cycling gold at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 despite not even owning a bike when she first started in the sport four years prior, is now looking to make a mark in bobsled. Having previously dabbled in bobsledding at 21 but feeling she lacked the leg power back then, Mitchell is now better prepared physically and mentally for the challenge.

Although Mitchell plans to return to track cycling with an eye on the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, she is fully committed to embracing her current bobsled journey. She dreams of potentially becoming one of the few athletes who have represented Canada in both the Winter and Summer Games. Despite the physical demands and challenges of transitioning between sports, Mitchell remains determined to excel and contribute to Team Canada’s success.

With her coachability and adaptability highlighted by Bobsleigh Canada Skeleton’s high-performance director and strength and conditioning coach, Mitchell’s drive, winning mentality, and quick learning abilities stand out. As she continues to navigate the complexities of bobsled, Mitchell remains focused on staying healthy, having fun, and striving to be the best Winter Olympian she can be.
