Labrador’s critical mineral industry is poised for growth as the demand for renewable energy technology increases, according to the Newfoundland and Labrador New Democratic Party (NDP). The party, led by Jim Dinn, unveiled their strategy to ensure that residents benefit from the industry’s expansion during a campaign event in Labrador alongside candidate Shazia Razi.
Dinn emphasized the importance of considering Labradorians’ well-being as the critical mineral sector develops, highlighting existing challenges such as limited access to healthcare, medical transportation, and housing. The NDP’s proposal includes establishing a specialized critical minerals division within the Department of Industry, Energy, and Technology to aid companies through regulatory processes.
Additionally, the NDP plans to allocate $5 million annually to attract new investments, boost funding for geological surveys to expedite mining activities, and conduct transportation studies to determine infrastructure needs for mineral exports. Razi echoed the sentiment, expressing concerns about the lack of essential services like healthcare and housing in Labrador and advocating for measures to safeguard residents and the environment amidst potential industry growth.
The NDP’s approach aims to ensure that economic development in the critical mineral sector aligns with the well-being of Labrador’s residents and the province as a whole.
