Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers has decided to return her Toronto Film Critics Association Award following the omission of a segment from her acceptance speech where she expressed solidarity with Palestine. The TFCA’s president, Johanna Schneller, explained that the decision to edit Tailfeathers’ speech was made to adhere to the event’s schedule but acknowledged Tailfeathers’ resignation in response to the incident.
Tailfeathers, who earned the outstanding supporting performance in a Canadian film for her portrayal in Melanie Oates’ drama “Sweet Angel Baby,” was absent from the ceremony and instead delivered her acceptance speech via video, which she claims was censored.
In an email to the TFCA, Tailfeathers stated that she is returning the award after complying with filming guidelines for her speech. Schneller expressed regret over Tailfeathers’ decision to return the award, emphasizing that the speech edits were made to manage the event’s timing.
However, Tailfeathers argued that her remarks on the Palestine conflict were only two sentences long and accused the organization of deliberately neutralizing and censoring her words.
Following the news, several members of the TFCA, including critics Adam Nayman, Saffron Maeve, Sarah-Tai Black, and film writer Radheyan Simonpillai, announced their resignations from the group on social media.
In the email shared with The Canadian Press, Tailfeathers revealed the content of the removed speech segment, where she expressed solidarity with Palestine amidst filming Sweet Angel Baby and acknowledged the ongoing struggle faced by the Palestinian people.
Having received multiple Canadian Screen Awards, including the Best Director award for “The Body Remembers When the World Broke Open” in collaboration with Kathleen Hepburn, Tailfeathers reiterated her commitment to speaking out about the Israel-Palestine conflict despite facing attempted silencing.
She also extended her empathy to the Jewish community affected by antisemitic violence, emphasizing the importance of addressing all forms of discrimination and violence while acknowledging the bravery of individuals within the Jewish community who speak out against the actions of the Israeli state.
The article further touches on the context of the conflict, mentioning the events leading to the Israeli onslaught on Gaza triggered by the Oct. 7, 2023 Hamas attack, which resulted in casualties and hostages.
Tailfeathers concluded her message by expressing solidarity with Palestinian artists and filmmakers and conveying her unwavering support for the Palestinian cause.
