Having earned an Academy Award for her animated film “KPop Demon Hunters,” Maggie Kang, who hails from Toronto, was honored with the key to the city. The recognition took place during a panel discussion at Departure Festival, where Mayor Olivia Chow surprised Kang on stage.
In her speech, Mayor Chow praised the achievements of the Korean-Canadian filmmaker, highlighting how her journey would serve as a source of inspiration for future generations. Kang, upon receiving the key, did not address the audience but graciously posed for photographs alongside Mayor Chow and Cindy Gouveia, the president of Sheridan College, where Kang studied.
Since its debut, “KPop Demon Hunters” has broken records on Netflix, becoming the platform’s most-watched film to date. The film’s success has also led to a chart-topping soundtrack and the approval for a sequel. During the panel discussion, Kang hinted at the upcoming project, expressing her commitment to maintaining the same level of dedication as she did for the first film, promising to create a movie that aligns with her vision.
Later in the week, Kang is set to be honored with the cultural innovator award at the Departure Honours gala.
