Jannik Sinner emerged victorious in the China Open by defeating American youngster Learner Tien 6-2, 6-2 in the final on Wednesday as part of his preparation for the upcoming Shanghai Masters. Sinner, securing his third title of the season and 21st overall, showcased a commanding performance against the 19-year-old Tien, who was the tournament’s second-youngest finalist.

Expressing his satisfaction, Sinner stated, “We aim to enhance our performance and strive for more success. I am delighted with the outcome.” With Carlos Alcaraz withdrawing due to an ankle injury suffered during the Japan Open, which he triumphed in on Tuesday, Sinner is poised to be the favorite at the upcoming Shanghai event.

In the semifinal clash at the China Open, Sinner clinched his 11th consecutive victory by defeating Alex de Minaur 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, securing his ninth straight final appearance at hard-court tournaments. Tien, ranked 52nd, made his debut in a tour final after Daniil Medvedev retired injured in their match, with the score at 5-7, 7-5, 4-0.

Meanwhile, in the WTA 1000 event held simultaneously, American Emma Navarro caused an upset by defeating top-seeded Iga Swiatek with a score of 6-4, 4-6, 6-0 in the fourth round. Navarro, aged 24, claimed her fourth victory over a top-five opponent, while Swiatek struggled with 70 unforced errors.

Navarro advanced to the quarterfinals alongside fellow Americans Coco Gauff and Amanda Anisimova, marking the first instance since the tournament’s inception in 2004 that three Americans reached the final eight. Additionally, the possibility of another American advancing exists with fifth-seeded Jessica Pegula set to face Marta Kostyuk of Ukraine.

The second-seeded Gauff is scheduled to compete against Eva Lys on Thursday in the ongoing tournament.
