“Poaching Incident Shocks Point Pelee National Park”

Published:

Parks Canada is currently looking into a suspected case of poaching involving waterfowl at Point Pelee National Park. The incident is believed to have occurred between 8 p.m. on April 23 and 8 a.m. on April 24 within the park’s marsh area. Authorities are urging individuals with any information regarding the illegal discharge of firearms or any suspicious activity involving people or vehicles to come forward.

The government agency emphasized that poaching is a serious violation under the Canada National Parks Act. In light of this, officials are keen on obtaining dashcam footage from various locations within the park, including the entrance, marsh boardwalk, and Blue Heron day use areas, during the specified timeframe.

Following the incident, Debra Parker, a regular visitor to Point Pelee, expressed concern after her friend, also a frequent park visitor, reported discovering a deceased swan, suspected to be a nesting female, with photographic evidence. Parker highlighted her distress over the presence of an individual with a firearm in the park, emphasizing the need to identify and penalize the responsible party.

Despite requests for clarification from CBC, Parks Canada refrained from disclosing the specific bird species that was poached. Meanwhile, Melissa Hargreaves, who frequently visits the park, recalled capturing images of the female swan just a day before the unfortunate incident. She described the swan as peacefully tending to its nest, exhibiting a serene and relaxed demeanor before the tragic event unfolded.

Expressing dismay over the poaching incident, Hargreaves hopes that the perpetrator will be apprehended and face the full extent of the law. Similarly, Wallaceburg resident and photography enthusiast Larry Strung, who visited the park earlier, shared his astonishment at the proximity of the nesting swans to the boardwalk. He expressed sadness at the harm inflicted on the swans, noting their grace and beauty and highlighting the lifelong bond between swan mates.

The community is deeply saddened by the incident, with many hoping for justice to be served and for measures to be taken to prevent such occurrences in the future.
