After being compelled to check his Academy Award during a trans-Atlantic flight, Pavel Talankin, a recent Oscar winner, experienced the loss of his statuette until the airline located it two days later. Talankin, one of the co-directors of the acclaimed documentary “Mr. Nobody Against Putin,” was unexpectedly required to check his award for a flight departing from New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport to Frankfurt, Germany, on Wednesday, as per a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) agent’s instructions. According to Talankin’s co-director, David Borenstein, a TSA agent at the airport cited concerns that the Oscar could potentially be used as a weapon, leading to the statuette being placed in a box and sent to the aircraft’s lower deck since Talankin did not possess a suitable bag for checking it in. Unfortunately, the Oscar did not reach Frankfurt as intended.
Following Borenstein’s social media post drawing attention to the missing Oscar, Lufthansa airline confirmed on Friday that they had located the misplaced statuette. In a statement, the airline expressed that the Oscar was now in their possession in Frankfurt and that they were in direct communication with Talankin to arrange for its swift return, offering apologies for the inconvenience caused and confirming an ongoing internal review of the incident.
The collaborative work of Talankin and Borenstein on “Mr. Nobody Against Putin” culminated in winning the Academy Award for best documentary in March, with their acceptance speech becoming a standout moment of the awards ceremony. Talankin, known as the “Mr. Nobody” portrayed in the film, had been a teacher and activities director in a Russian school, documenting his students’ pro-war activities in Ukraine, which were later combined with Borenstein’s contributions from Denmark. Talankin, speaking through a translator in Russian during the ceremony, made a heartfelt plea for the end of wars, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding the future for all children.
Despite the attention drawn to the incident, the TSA had not responded to inquiries by Friday.
