A surge in motorcycle fatalities this year in Nova Scotia has sparked urgent pleas for intervention from safety advocates. The province has witnessed sixteen motorcyclist deaths in 2025, marking the highest toll in a decade. The victims include a young hockey prodigy, a recent retiree, and a long-married couple.
Marlene Roach, the founder of the Bikers Down Society, a support group aiding injured Nova Scotian motorcyclists, has expressed frustration, emphasizing the escalating danger. She is calling on the government to enforce mandatory training programs for all prospective motorcycle license holders and impose restrictions on the types of motorcycles younger riders can operate.
According to Roach, the responsibility also lies with other motorists to be vigilant and watch out for motorcyclists, especially during left turns at intersections. Corey Ford, a collision reconstructionist with the Nova Scotia RCMP, highlighted that distracted driving, aggressive behavior, impaired driving, and neglecting safety precautions like helmets contribute significantly to the fatalities.
Ford emphasized the importance of mastering emergency braking techniques on motorcycles and stressed the need for individual accountability in ensuring road safety. While aiming for zero fatalities is the ultimate goal, Ford acknowledged the reality of risks on the road and emphasized the necessity for all drivers to be proactive in protecting themselves and respecting others’ safety on the roadways.
