Disc golf arrived in Newfoundland and Labrador five years ago, and enthusiasts from all over the island are pleased to witness the sport’s ongoing expansion.

Approximately 60 disc golfers gathered in Corner Brook for the fourth annual provincial disc golf championship last Saturday, braving challenging winds that made Frisbee throwing a tough task.

Johnston Miller, the president of Corner Brook Disc Golf, played a key role in introducing the sport to western Newfoundland. He initiated these efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, when he encountered disc golf while living in Ontario.

“The pandemic was actually a catalyst for disc golf, with many individuals seeking outdoor activities that could be done while maintaining social distance. Many others shared the same sentiment,” Miller shared with CBC News on Saturday.

“This was in 2020. Fast forward to 2025, about five years after the first public course was established in Stephenville. It’s truly amazing to witness the sport’s growth over this period.”

Disc golf courses can be found throughout the island, including in St. John’s, Corner Brook, and Stephenville, with a permanent course set to open in Gander in October.

President of Disc Golf N.L., Daniel Henderson, noted the significant growth of the sport over the past five years, particularly in the previous year. The provincial championship marked the conclusion of a provincial tour held during the summer and fall.

“The sport has been steadily gaining popularity in the province, and we anticipate further growth. It’s a fantastic way to engage in physical activity and have fun, offering an experience that varies based on individual preferences,” Henderson expressed.

Henderson highlighted the allure of disc golf due to its accessibility, requiring only a single Frisbee to play, and the free-to-use courses available across the island.

Disc golfers from across Newfoundland and Labrador met in Corner Brook this weekend for the fourth annual provincial championship. It was a time for players to connect, and mark five years since the sport set roots in the province. The CBC’s Alex Kennedy was there.

David and Rob Sills discovered the sport earlier this year and journeyed from Bishop’s Falls to take part in the competition.

“I enjoy throwing Frisbees, and that’s essentially what disc golf entails,” shared 10-year-old David. “My dad and I set up a course in our friend’s backyard with a few holes.”

Rob Sills expressed his enthusiasm to continue engaging in the sport and witness its further expansion, particularly in central
