Netflix and Warner Music Group (WMG) have recently inked an exclusive long-term agreement to create documentary series and films delving into the lives, music, and legacies of iconic WMG artists. This collaboration, announced on Friday, provides Netflix with access to WMG’s extensive music catalog, which includes legendary names like David Bowie, Cher, Fleetwood Mac, Aretha Franklin, and Joni Mitchell, as well as modern stars such as Charli XCX, Coldplay, and Bruno Mars.
The deal signifies the latest development in the competitive landscape between music rights holders and streaming platforms aiming to transform rich music libraries into premium visual content to attract subscribers. Music documentaries have emerged as a popular medium for fan-centric and culturally significant content, exemplified by the success of Taylor Swift’s “Eras Tour” film, which generated over $260 million globally.
As per the agreement, WMG will collaborate with Unigram, a production company affiliated with the label, which will act as the studio for their long-form projects. Each production will be crafted in partnership with the artists themselves or their estates.
This partnership enhances Netflix’s expanding array of music-focused content, solidifying its reputation as a frontrunner in the genre. The streaming giant has already made a mark with acclaimed releases like “Homecoming: A Film by Beyonce” and “Quincy.”
Competing platforms have also been heavily investing in music storytelling. Disney+ boasts a diverse lineup of notable releases, such as “The Beach Boys,” while Max has garnered attention with documentaries like “Stax: Soulsville U.S.A.,” spotlighting historic labels and influential musicians.
Apple Music has ventured into original music video content, producing documentaries and live concert streams through its Apple Music Live series, featuring popular artists like Harry Styles and Billie Eilish.
