“National Film Day Honors Graham Greene”

Published:

As communities nationwide unite to celebrate Canadian cinema and the storytellers behind it, a series of special events are planned to pay tribute to the life and legacy of Graham Greene, a prominent Six Nations actor.

Hailing from the Oneida community of Six Nations of the Grand River in southern Ontario, Greene passed away at 73 last autumn.

April 15 marks National Canadian Film Day, a day-long celebration of Canadian cinema coast-to-coast, co-sponsored by CBC. The event will showcase Canadian films through screenings in various localities across the country.

As part of this year’s commemorations, film screenings will be organized to celebrate and remember Greene’s contributions. Among the featured films is a screening of his work Clearcut (1991) at The Woodland Cultural Centre in Brantford, Ont.

The free screening is set to begin at 6:00 p.m. on April 15 and will be attended by members of Greene’s family and the Six Nations community. Additionally, the event will showcase the short documentary Graham Greene: I’m Just Me by Tara Johns.

Screenings of Clearcut and Greene’s acclaimed film Seeds will also take place in Toronto, Ottawa, and Halifax, N.S.

Throughout his nearly five-decade career, Greene portrayed numerous characters on stage and screen, ranging from major motion pictures to various TV productions.

He was a recipient of the Order of Canada and earned an Academy Award nomination for his role in Dances with Wolves. In 2004, he received the Earle Grey lifetime achievement award for television acting (Canadian Screen Award), and in 2025, he was honored with a Governor General’s Performing Arts Award for Lifetime Artistic Achievement.
