“Mike Myers and Hazel Mae to be Honored at Canadian Screen Awards”

The Canadian Screen Awards are gearing up to recognize actor Mike Myers, sportscaster Hazel Mae, and other notable figures throughout Canadian Screen Week this year. Myers, Mae, Canadian Film Centre executive director Maxine Bailey, and filmmaker Chandler Levack’s film “Mile End Kicks” will be praised for their significant impact and achievements in the film and television industry.

Tammy Frick, CEO of the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television, expressed excitement about honoring these individuals for their outstanding contributions that not only inspire future storytellers but also showcase Canada’s exceptional talent and innovation in the screen arts globally.

Canadian Screen Week is scheduled to take place in Toronto from May 27 to May 31, culminating in the Canadian Screen Awards ceremony recognizing excellence in Canadian cinema, television, and digital media.

Mike Myers is this year’s recipient of the Academy Icon Award, acknowledging his remarkable career trajectory from his breakthrough on “Saturday Night Live” to starring in blockbuster films like “Austin Powers” and “Shrek.” The Canadian Academy describes Myers as one of the most versatile performers of his generation, with over 80 film and television credits to his name as an actor, writer, producer, and director.

Hazel Mae, a prominent figure in Canadian sportscasting known for her coverage of Toronto Blue Jays games, will be honored with the Gordon Sinclair Award for Broadcast Journalism. Mae’s exceptional work capturing the highs and lows of events like the World Series has earned her accolades, including the Jack Graney Award from the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum.

Maxine Bailey, the executive director of the Canadian Film Centre, will receive the Changemaker Award for her efforts in promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in Canadian media. Bailey’s initiatives aim to create a more inclusive and accessible screen industry, building on her previous work at the Toronto International Film Festival and founding Share Her Journey to achieve gender parity in the Canadian film industry.

Chandler Levack’s film “Mile End Kicks,” starring Barbie Ferreira, tells the story of a young music critic’s journey in Montreal’s Mile End neighborhood. The film not only portrays the vibrant music scene but also serves as a model of sustainable production practices, recognized with the Sustainable Production Award for its commitment to reducing environmental impact throughout the project.

The Canadian Screen Awards ceremony, emceed by actor Andrew Phung, will be broadcast on CBC and stream on CBC Gem on May 31 at 8 p.m. ET. This year’s ceremony will also be simulcast on Bell-owned CTV and Crave, and Corus-owned Global and STACKTV, showcasing the best of Canadian cinema, television, and digital media.
