Despite a leadoff homer by George Springer, the Blue Jays struggled to generate offense, with Anthony Santander’s second-inning single being their only other hit. Blue Jays outfielder Davis Schneider acknowledged the Mariners’ strength as the second-best team in the AL.
Toronto’s Kevin Gausman settled in after a shaky start, retiring 15 consecutive batters before yielding a game-tying home run to Raleigh. Gausman was replaced after walking Julio Rodriguez, leading to Polanco’s RBI single off reliever Brendon Little. Polanco later added an insurance run in the eighth inning.
The loss snapped the Blue Jays’ six-game home winning streak, following three days’ rest after eliminating the New York Yankees. In contrast, the Mariners arrived in Toronto after a grueling 15-inning victory over the Detroit Tigers.
Game 2 of the series was set for the following day, with rookie Trey Yesavage slated to start for the Blue Jays. Yesavage, who set a postseason record by striking out 11 Yankees in his last outing, expressed concern over his family facing abuse due to his on-field performances.
The series will move to Seattle’s T-Mobile Park for Game 3, promising a fiercely contested matchup between the two competitive teams.
