“Margaree Salmon Association Uses Electrofishing to Monitor Fish Populations”

In recent years, the Margaree Salmon Association in northern Cape Breton has been utilizing electrofishing as a method to monitor fish populations in the Margaree River. This technique involves the use of an electric current to momentarily stun fish, allowing crews to safely capture, measure, and identify them before releasing them back into the river.

Michael Fabiano, the conservation coordinator at the association, mentioned that electrofishing operations typically run from May to late September and have a mortality rate of two percent among the thousands of fish processed each season. Ensuring fish safety is their top priority, Fabiano emphasized that they avoid electrofishing in high water temperature conditions.

The crew carefully regulates the electric current to immobilize fish for a brief period, wearing protective gear like heavy rubber gloves and chest waders to prevent any injuries from handling electricity in water. According to Fabiano, no crew members have experienced serious shocks during his tenure with the group spanning 18 months.

Surveying various locations along the 120-kilometer river, the crews aim to identify the most productive streams and evaluate the overall health of the fish population. The catch primarily consists of trout and Atlantic salmon, with occasional sightings of eels and lampreys. This season, approximately 1,800 fish have been caught and released across nine streams, showing a decrease from the previous year.

Attributing the decline partly to challenging conditions in the prior year, Paul MacNeil, the association’s president, highlighted the increased scientific research efforts due to reduced data collection by Fisheries and Oceans Canada over the past five years. Established in 1982, the association sought dependable data to monitor river health amidst changing climate patterns.

To bridge the data gap, the association collaborated with the Chéticamp River Salmon Association to procure electrofishing equipment. MacNeil pointed out that while members also conduct fish counts by swimming in the river, electrofishing offers more precise data on juvenile fish populations within specific territories.

The electrofishing method provides a comprehensive approach to data collection, capturing a substantial portion of juvenile fish in targeted areas. This enables a more accurate assessment of the river’s ecosystem health and population dynamics.
