“Ma-Me-O Beach Votes to Remain Summer Village”

Published:

Residents and property owners in Ma-Me-O Beach, a small lakeside community in Alberta, have voted overwhelmingly to maintain their special status as a summer village rather than merging into Wetaskiwin County. The final count showed 256 votes in favor and 46 against the decision, signaling a strong mandate for the community of around 280 properties.

Mayor Christine Holmes expressed satisfaction with the outcome, emphasizing the importance of the decisive vote and the clarity it provides regarding the community’s direction. The vote was prompted by a viability review initiated by the province in December 2023, following financial challenges stemming from a failed wastewater management project that left Ma-Me-O Beach with a $5 million debt.

Holmes confirmed that the viability review process is nearing completion, with significant progress made in reducing the community’s debt burden. Ma-Me-O Beach, situated approximately 100 kilometers southwest of Edmonton on Pigeon Lake’s southeast shore, holds a unique status as one of Alberta’s 51 summer villages, designated for seasonal resort communities.

The special municipal status of summer villages is no longer granted but is upheld for existing communities like Ma-Me-O Beach. This status allows property owners with permanent residences elsewhere to participate in both the summer village election and the municipal election at their primary residence location. Should Ma-Me-O Beach have merged with Wetaskiwin County, only county residents would have had voting rights.

Longtime resident Miles Jackson, who has been connected to Ma-Me-O Beach since his family acquired property there in 1952, expressed contentment with the community’s decision to retain its autonomy and unique status. While the vote results are pending official approval from the province, the community is preparing to implement recommendations from the government and submit regular reports over the next five years.

Municipal Affairs Minister Dan Williams mentioned that the province is still deliberating on the viability options for Ma-Me-O Beach and will communicate its decision to the community in the near future.
