“Loblaw Closes Two No Name Stores in Ontario”

Published:

Loblaw has decided to close two of the three No Name discount grocery stores launched in Ontario last September. The stores in St. Catharines and LaSalle will be shutting down, while the Brockville location will remain open for now.

Initially introduced as part of Loblaw’s strategy to offer lower prices and test new concepts, these stores featured a limited selection of items delivered less frequently, fewer refrigerated sections, and shorter operating hours. The aim was to reduce operating costs and offer products up to 20% cheaper than competitors.

The closure of the St. Catharines store in July was followed by the announcement of the impending closure of the LaSalle store on October 25. The fate of the Brockville store is still being evaluated by Loblaw.

According to a spokesperson, the Windsor-area store initially had a strong customer base but failed to establish long-term sustainability. While Loblaw did not provide specific reasons for the closures or insights gained from the pilot project, industry experts anticipate the company to focus more on its discount brands to compete with rivals like Costco and Walmart.

Mike von Massow, a food demand expert at the University of Guelph, believes that the closure does not signify the failure of the discount model but rather indicates its unsuitability for the current market and brand. Customers at the LaSalle store praised the concept but criticized its location in a car-centric area, suggesting that a downtown core setting in Windsor would have been more successful.

Von Massow expects Loblaw to refine its future stores based on the lessons learned from this experience to cater to consumers seeking value amid rising food prices. With grocery costs now 30% higher than five years ago, discount brands like No Name are becoming increasingly popular among budget-conscious shoppers, particularly those with lower incomes.

In conclusion, while the No Name stores’ closure may not have been a resounding success, the experience has provided valuable insights for Loblaw to enhance its offerings and compete in the evolving retail landscape.
