Camryn Williams knew she wanted to pursue a career in nursing after her visit to Lakehead University’s nursing simulation lab during her elementary school years. Today, she is employed as a cardiac nurse at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre, marking the first graduate of LU’s Achievement Program.
Reflecting on her journey, Williams expressed a sense of fulfillment, stating that becoming a nurse has been a long-standing aspiration that now holds special significance to her. The Achievement Program, established by Lakehead University over a decade ago, aims to facilitate post-secondary education access for students encountering barriers.
Williams, who was among the initial cohort of 13 Grade 4 students in the program, described her experience as highly positive. Amanda Stefanile, the coordinator of the Achievement Program, highlighted that enrolled students engage in activities within their school, community, and with Lakehead University, ultimately earning first-year university tuition.
Stefanile emphasized the program’s success and expansion, noting its presence in Thunder Bay and other locations like Nipigon, Geraldton, Sioux Lookout, Dryden, and Kenora. The goal, she stated, is to address community needs, enhance accessibility to Lakehead University, and bridge educational disparities for students facing various challenges.
Looking ahead, Stefanile expressed anticipation for more students to benefit from the program and fulfill their aspirations, underscoring the university’s commitment to supporting them throughout their academic journey.
