A professor of atmospheric science at the University of Manitoba has raised concerns about federal funding cuts affecting a weather radar research group, potentially hindering the ability of forecasters to detect tornadoes. Despite a previous investment of $180 million by the federal government to install 33 new high-quality weather radar systems across Canada a decade ago, the issue lies in outdated software and algorithms used by forecasters to interpret radar data, according to Professor John Hanesiak.
The disbanding of the dedicated weather radar research team, as highlighted by Hanesiak and eight other weather researchers in a letter to federal Environment and Climate Change Minister Julie Dabrusin, raises doubts about the implementation of necessary improvements. The team, previously operated by Environment and Climate Change Canada, played a crucial role in optimizing the national weather radar network to enhance public safety by potentially reducing fatalities, injuries, and property damage.
In response to concerns, Minister Dabrusin emphasized that the government aims to strengthen the delivery of science through identified efficiencies while ensuring the continued operation of the radar network. Environment Canada also assured that changes to radar research activities would not impact meteorologists’ access to operational radar imagery and data.
‘Where was the alert?’
Residents of Winnipeg, particularly in the Whyte Ridge area, were caught off guard by a recent tornado that caused significant damage without any prior warning. Despite the absence of alerts, thunderstorm warnings were issued, indicating the challenges meteorologists face in predicting tornadoes accurately. Environment Canada noted that while radar systems can detect conditions that may lead to tornado formation, the unpredictability of tornadoes poses a significant challenge.
Professor Hanesiak emphasized the urgent need for software and algorithm upgrades to fully utilize the potential of the new radar systems and improve forecast accuracy. He highlighted that existing technology hampers the capabilities of forecasters despite their expertise, calling for enhancements to interpret radar data effectively.
