Cricket Canada has announced the immediate suspension of its chief executive officer Salman Khan, with full pay and benefits, in a move aimed at upholding organizational integrity and ensuring fair procedures, according to a statement by Cricket Canada president Amjad Bajwa. Khan and another individual were charged with theft and fraud over $5,000 related to their involvement with the Calgary and District Cricket League back in March. Khan denied the allegations through a social media post by the Alberta Cricket Association, emphasizing that there was no evidence against him and expressing readiness to defend himself.
Bajwa mentioned concerns about negativity associated with Khan when asked about the suspension. Although the charges have yet to be proven in court, they have had an impact on the organization. Cricket Canada disclosed that an independent special committee, in collaboration with the executive committee and external legal advisors, is conducting a comprehensive review, although the specifics of the review were not detailed.
The organization affirmed its unwavering commitment to its vision, mission, players, and the broader Canadian cricket community in a statement titled “Cricket Canada Announces Leadership Transition and Strengthened Governance Priorities.” Additionally, Cricket Canada faced a recent suspension from the Canadian Safe Sport Program due to non-compliance with participant e-learning and consent requirements, as pointed out by the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport. However, the organization has since been reinstated after meeting the necessary criteria.
