Catherine O’Hara posthumously received the award for best female actor in a comedy series at the recent Actor Awards ceremony in Los Angeles. The renowned Canadian comedic actress passed away on January 30 at 71 years old due to a blood clot in her lung, a fact revealed after her death, alongside her private battle with rectal cancer.
O’Hara was honored for her portrayal of Patty Leigh, a seasoned former studio executive, in the Apple TV comedy series “The Studio,” which humorously satirizes the film and television industry. She triumphed over other esteemed nominees such as Jenna Ortega in “Wednesday,” Jean Smart in “Hacks,” Kristen Wiig in “Palm Royale,” and Kathryn Hahn in “The Studio.”
During the awards ceremony, the audience at Shine Auditorium erupted in applause and rose to their feet to give a standing ovation when O’Hara was announced as the winner. Co-creator of “The Studio,” Seth Rogen, accepted the award on her behalf, praising O’Hara’s exceptional talent and generosity in contributing to their work.
Rogen shared a touching anecdote about O’Hara’s dedication to her craft, highlighting her habit of sending revised scene suggestions to improve the show the night before filming. He emphasized how her creative input consistently elevated not just her character but the entire production.
Aside from O’Hara’s individual win, “The Studio” dominated the comedy categories at the awards show, clinching victories for best comedy series and best actor for Rogen. O’Hara’s illustrious career spanned various comedic roles, from memorable skits on SCTV to iconic films like “Home Alone” and “Beetlejuice,” culminating in her acclaimed portrayal of Moira Rose in “Schitt’s Creek.”
Before her passing, O’Hara had previously received two Actor Awards for her outstanding work on “Schitt’s Creek,” winning for best actress in a comedy series and best ensemble in a comedy series alongside her castmates.
